Primal Point Fly Rods
What an extraordinary rod this is. We were amazed when we car park cast this rod at the back of the shop, but Mike also tried it on a 30+ kph day in the 19 Lagoons. It is both soft and powerful. With barely more than the leader out the Primal Point rod loads quickly and delivers a fly on point. We loved this rod so much we bought the lot and because we did a bulk buy we saved and you will too. It is a cracker of a rod in 7'11" 3wt and 8'9' 5wt. Weird lengths, but they work.
There are just two different models in 3wt and 5wt.
What Peter Hayes said:
Fly Rod review Primal Point - 8‘9“, 5 weight, 4 piece rod.
This rod has nine runners plus the tip. It’s one short compared to a 9 foot Sage which has 10+ the tip, which makes sense, being a shorter rod. There’s a normal bridge type stripping guide the other runners are single foot, which are often used to save both overall and swing weight. The cork handle and wooden reel seat and winch fittings are good.
When I first felt the rod without a line, it felt like it had a little bit of flex and a whole lot of soul. I tried this with the line Mike from Essential suggested - a five weight ‘Trout’ Mastery series line, which is a true to weight line with a 51 foot head length. It made the rod sing a beautiful song.
It was easy, and effortless to tap out narrow dolphin nose loops at short, medium and long casting lengths. It’s easy to cast the line well beyond what an ideal fishing range should be.
The rod is capable of tiny, narrow loops with or without a haul. I feel that today some of the more modern fast action rods require a haul or an overweight line to make them work. This is not the case with this rod. It is a pleasure.
I’m not sure what possessed a company like Primal to build an 8 foot 9 inch rod . Perhaps they’re paying homage to Winton’s famous rods of that length. Never mind what the reason is this length makes for a fine trout dry fly rod, a pleasure to use and it does not need to be overweighted with a heavy line to make it work.
Have a cast - you might find yourself owning a new rod.

What we think
This Point reminds us of Winston and Scott G Series - moderate and oily smooth.
Many anglers do not want to be, nor mirror, a casting guru that can cast 80 feet. They like a slower, more moderate action and this is where the 'Point' absolutely shines. When you want a rod that gives you the best stream performance it's hard to beat the Primal Point in value.
When fishing tight twig waters and small streams, which is where a shorter rod and slower action shine. That said, it is not a wimp and will power out a line if needed.
Don't overweight this rod with a clunky heavy line and you will be smiling all the way to the riverbank.
We particularly love the five weight and you will too. Moderate action with plenty of reserve power in the but. It is not a wimp when you load it up with a double haul.
