Abel has been making reels in Montrose, Colorado since 1988 — and the SDX is the clearest expression of what that means. Every component is precision-machined from aircraft-grade aluminium in-house, assembled by hand, and tested before it leaves the workshop. There are no shortcuts, no outsourced parts, no compromises. When you're standing on a flat with a permit tailing at 20 metres, or watching a GT accelerate toward the reef, that matters.

The SDX is Abel's largest-arbor reel — designed specifically for the situations where backing capacity, retrieve speed, and drag authority are non-negotiable. With a retrieve rate of 15.5 to 17.5 inches per turn (the fastest in the Abel range), it picks up line fast when a fish turns and runs toward you. The sealed carbon and stainless-steel drag is smooth from zero to maximum pressure, with no stiction and no surprises.

Who Is the SDX For?

This is a reel for serious saltwater anglers targeting large, fast, powerful fish — permit, tarpon, giant trevally, yellowfin tuna, sailfish, and marlin. The 9/11 is the go-to for permit and mid-size GT work; the 12/14 is built for the heaviest applications where you need maximum backing and maximum stopping power. Both are available in ported frames (Black Ported) as stocked, which reduce weight without sacrificing structural integrity.
